Born in north of England. Educated at Wycombe Abbey School, Bucks; graduated with MA Honours at St Andrews University, Scotland; spent year in Italy with scholarship to Perugia University. Joined Sotheby's wine department in 1983 - working for 12 years as wine & spirit specialist. For past 35 years worked as The Scotsman newspaper's weekly wine/drinks columnist, also writing for other specialist trade and consumer magazines and radio broadcasts.

As a certified wine educator based in Scotland, Rose currently hosts a large programme of consumer wine courses, wine masterclasses, charity tastings, fine wine dinners, team building days, corporate entertainment - and virtual tastings. Organises & hosts exclusive group wine tours (2018 Portugal, 2019 California & Oregon, 2022 Jerez & 2022 Germany) - and bespoke tailor-made tours abroad for clients. Judges at international competitions (Chile, China). An active charity fundraiser - creator of the Comic Relief Wine Fair, a bi-annual wine fair.
