History Hit podcast with Rebecca Gibb MW

Rebecca Gibb MW is featured in Dan Snow’s podcast History Hit, discussing the Champagne riots, which were the subject of her research paper entitled Were the causes of the 1911 Champagne riots essentially economic? An extract from the podcast: “There are troops stationed in Champagne to try and maintain peace. They’ve seen that trouble is fermenting since the 1910 harvest failed, and they are trying to keep a cap on it, but there are too many vignerons. In April 1911 they do around the equivalent of £1 million worth of damage to various Champagne houses, and there are about 40,000 vines that are trampled, or burnt.”
