Following an initial career spell with what is now Diageo, David's career has focused on vocational education in the field of wines and spirits. Initially a freelance tutor, he joined the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET®) in 1990. His first role centered on teaching, where he helped develop the WSET's Systematic Approach to Tasting©. In 1998 when the WSET restructured in response to new regulatory requirements, David was asked to head up the newly created Awarding Body function, and put it through both ISO 9001 and Qualification and Curriculum Authority accreditation. He went on to establish WSET's International Business Development function, which has now grown to three teams working out of offices in the UK, the USA and Hong Kong. David now works for the Global Education team as Lead Educator for WSET's Educator Training Programmes worldwide. David is also a non-Executive Director of the International Wine and Spirit Competition.
