Clive Coates MW

Became an MW 1971

Based in France

Original ambition to be a chef. Rapidly disillusioned at hotel school. Resolved to join wine trade: this helped by a travel scholarship I won as top student. Visited Bordeaux etc 1964. Worked 20 years in the wine trade, mainly for The Wine Society (1967-1973) and British Transport Hotels (1975-1981) (Executive Director Wine Division). Passed MW 1971. Wrote about wine from the start, especially in Decanter from the magazine's inception. In 1984 'retired' to launch The Vine. Now spend approximately 6 months out of 12 either in the vineyards or lecturing around the world.
