MW study programme wines 2018-2019

The Institute of Masters of Wine would like to thank all those who generously supplied wines to the 2018-19 MW study programme. The wines were shown throughout the academic year at residential seminars in Adelaide (Australia), Napa and Washington State (USA), Rust (Austria), Bordeaux (France) and Berkshire (UK) and at over 70 course days around the world.

The seminars and course days are part of the MW study programme and were attended by students pursuing the title of Master of Wine. There were 359 students from 45 countries in the 2018-2019 MW study programme. Students at the course days and residential seminars were guided by over 100 Masters of Wine, who led tastings, theory sessions and mock exams. The wines, listed below, were used for the tastings and mock exams to steer students’ preparation for both the stage 1 assessment and the stage 2 MW examination.

The supply of the wines ensures the IMW can continue to offer the best possible experience to students on their journey to becoming a Master of Wine.

Brian Browning receives SommFoundation, David A. Carpenter Masters of Wine scholarship

Brian Browning receives SommFoundation, David A. Carpenter Masters of Wine scholarship

The Institute of Masters of Wine is delighted to announce that a winner has been chosen for the annual SommFoundation, David A. Carpenter Masters of Wine scholarship. Brian Browning, a practical only student based in Las Vegas, has been awarded this $2,000 (USD) scholarship to help towards the costs of his studies.

The mission of the Guild of Sommeliers Education Foundation (“SommFoundation”) is to assist wine and spirits professionals to achieve the highest level of proficiency and accreditation in the food and beverage industry. SommFoundation provides enrichment opportunities and scholarships to sommeliers, restaurant professionals, wine journalists, and winemakers to further their knowledge about the world of wine and spirits and elevate the level of competency in the understanding of the beverage profession. This David A. Carpenter Masters of Wine scholarship, sponsored by David and Diane Carpenter, was created to further the mission of SommFoundation. The Carpenters work to collaborate with a wide range of wine organizations in an effort to provide opportunities for all wine professionals wishing to develop their knowledge and skills.

Brian Browning is a Fine Wine Portfolio Consultant for Breakthru Beverage based in Las Vegas, where he teaches WSET classes for the Wine Academy of Las Vegas. Brian has over 20 years of experience as a wine professional, having worked extensively in winery operations as well as positions in logistics and supply chain management. On hearing he was the 2019 winner he said, “I will use this amazing scholarship opportunity to travel and increase my global knowledge of the wine industry, whilst continuing to grow and share throughout the international community.”

The scholarship was open to North America practical only students, and was awarded based on need and merit.
