Wines from Spain Becomes a Major Institute Supporter
The Institute of Masters of Wine is delighted to announce that Wines from Spain has become a major supporter of its work.
This agreement will see Wines from Spain contribute to the Institute’s international study programme which prepares candidates for the Masters of Wine Examination. More than 250 wine professionals from 28 different countries are currently enrolled in the programme while the membership of the Institute comprises 289 Masters of Wine based in 23 different countries.
Wines from Spain is the marketing body responsible for promoting Spanish wines on the world stage.

Reh Kendermann Bursary Winners Announced
The Institute of Masters of Wine and Reh Kendermann GmbH are delighted to announce that Heather Miller and Patrick Schmitt are the recipients of this year’s prestigious Reh Kendermann Bursaries.
The bursaries, open to first and second year students in the Institute’s study programme, consist of two trips to Germany where the recipients visit Reh Kendermann GmbH, one of Germany’s most important wineries and ambassador for German wine, as well as other producers, either of the successful applicant’s own choice or selected by Reh Kendermann if the applicant prefers.
Heather and Patrick secured their bursaries on the strength of their essays addressing how Germany should take advantage of the current trend towards lower alcohol wines.
On behalf of Reh Kendermann, Alison Flemming MW, Export Sales Director said: “Germany is a truly remarkable wine producing country and presents MW students with vibrant and intriguing wines which are second to none. It is unthinkable for any ambitious student to omit the quality and elegance produced by Germany’s unique combination of cool climate, expert knowledge and modern winemaking. Heather and Patrick now have a great opportunity to increase their knowledge of German wines.”

Two New Masters of Wine Announced
Liz Thach, a senior academic in the USA, and Antony Moss, of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) in London, are the first new Masters of Wine of 2011.
The announcement by the Institute of Masters of Wine comes after both successfully completed their MW dissertations, the third and final element of the Masters of Wine Examination.
This brings the total number of Masters of Wine in the world to 290 with members of the Institute based in 23 different countries.
Lynne Sherriff MW, Chairman of the Institute, said: “We are delighted to welcome Liz and Anthony to the international community of Masters of Wine. Both have demonstrated the knowledge and practical abilities required to gain our industry’s most highly regarded title. In their respective roles, they will undoubtedly do much to further learning and interaction in the world of wine. We also look forward to them contributing to the development of new MWs in the years ahead via their participation in our study and mentoring programmes.”
Liz is Professor of Management & Wine Business at Sonoma State University. She is a frequent speaker at wine conferences and wrote the book “Wine – a Global Business”, published in 2005. Liz’s dissertation identified and analysed differences in wine drinking occasions for male and female wine consumers in California.
Antony began in the wine trade in 1999. In 2001 he moved to London to join Sainsbury’s and then moved to the WSET in 2004, where he is now Research & Development Director. Antony’s dissertation compared the labour markets for skilled restaurant wine service staff in the UK and Sweden.
Liz and Anthony will be formally inducted to the membership of the Institute at its annual awards ceremony and reception at Vintners’ Hall in London on 9 November.
